Commercial property area guide: Wirral - England

Commercial properties to rent in Wirral.

Wirral is a metropolitan borough in Merseyside. It is sandwiched between the River Mersey and the River Dee, which separate it from Liverpool and North Wales respectively. Lots of people know it as ‘The Wirral’.

A number of major towns are situated in Wirral, including Birkenhead, Wallasey, Bebington, Heswall, Hoylake and West Kirby. Its location by the Irish Sea has meant it’s been inhabited for thousands of years. In fact, there is even evidence that people from the Mesolithic lived here, with hunter-gatherer tools dating back to around 7000BC found in the region. By the 20th century, docks in Birkenhead and Wallasey Pool were prospering and the Wirral had become a borough.

Much of Wirral is dominated by picturesque villages, open land and sandy beaches. There are a number of historical sites and nature reserves, protecting the area’s heritage.

Wirral’s location just across the river from Liverpool makes it a great place for businesses. It is increasingly becoming a hub for low carbon manufacturing and energy sectors. Other firms enjoy its close proximity to both Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Manchester Airport.

Transport

RailMerseyrail Wirral runs local trains around the borough and to towns in surrounding areas, such as Liverpool, Wrexham (North Wales), Chester and Ellesmere Port. For getting further afield, connections at Liverpool Lime Street offer fast services to London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and more.

BusThere are lots of bus routes between villages and towns across Wirral Peninsula. They’re organised by Merseytravel, which partners with Stagecoach and Arriva to deliver the services. Routes between Liverpool, Ellesmere Port and Chester are part of the Quality Bus initiative. By coordinating different bus operators, they are able to provide an integrated service with buses every 10 minutes on weekdays. Only one ticket is needed, no matter how many operators a traveller uses.

WaterA novel way of travelling in the area is to catch a boat across to Liverpool. Mersey Ferries offers commuting journeys from Seacombe, beginning at 7:20am and taking around 10 minutes to cross the river. There are also day river cruises for people wanting to explore the Mersey River.

AirTwo major airports are nearby Wirral. Liverpool John Lennon is just a 45-minute drive and offers flights to destinations across Europe, such as Amsterdam, Barcelona, Madrid, Milan and many more. For travelling further afield, Manchester Airport offers flights to Asia, Australia, Africa and the Americas. It is the third busiest airport in the UK. You can reach the airport in just 45 minutes by car from Birkenhead, though it’s more difficult to reach by public transport compared to Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
