Commercial property area guide: Clapham - London

Commercial properties to rent in Clapham

Clapham is one of London’s most popular residential districts, and businesses have flocked to the area to make the most of its vibrant scene. It’s situated south of the Thames, between Battersea, Stockwell and Brixton, with areas in both the Borough of Lambeth and the Borough of Wandsworth.

As a relatively large area in London, it has four distinct zones: North, South, Junction and Old Town. Both Clapham South and Clapham Old Town have a village-like feel with independent shops and attractive properties. Clapham Junction, on the other hand, is more built up with large shops, restaurants and bars on its busy high street. Clapham Common is a large park in the centre which acts as a meeting place for people across the area.

Although Clapham has been popular for centuries thanks to its grand architecture, it wasn’t until the 20th century that it became a real commuter hub. The introduction of the railway connected residents to the centre and transformed it into a suburb home to a variety of classes.

One of Clapham’s most notorious claims to fame was the Clapham Sect – a group of 18th century social reformers who campaigned heavily for the abolition of the slave trade. It has also been home to numerous famous residents, from Samuel Pepys to William Wilberforce and Vivienne Westwood.

Transport

UndergroundThere are three underground stations in the district: Clapham South, Clapham North and Clapham Common. Although there is also a station named Clapham Junction, this one actually lies within Battersea. All of the stations are in Zone 2 on the Northern Line. It takes around 15 minutes to reach London Bridge and about 30 minutes to reach St Pancras.

OvergroundClapham High Street is the district’s Overground station. Using this network, you can reach as far as Chingford, Watford Junction, Richmond and West Croydon. You could also use the network to reach Clapham Junction. This major interchange offers additional services including the Gatwick Express, South Western Railway and Southern. It is an easy way to reach destinations outside of London.

Bus The area is served by a number of bus routes, including the 35, 39, 87, 219 and 337. You can use the buses to reach places like Shoreditch, Wimbledon and Richmond. Some of the services run 24/7.

CyclingCyclists can use the Cycle Superhighway 7 route to reach Central London. As the city creates more of these paths, it will become even easier to get around on bike.

AirBoth Heathrow and Gatwick are easy to reach from Clapham. It takes around an hour to travel to both airports by car or public transport, making it easy for a quick getaway or meetings overseas. Heathrow is the busiest airport in the UK, handling over 80 million passengers a year. Gatwick is the second busiest, supporting over 45 million passengers annually. Whichever airport you choose, you can fly to destinations across the globe.
