Area guide: Bermondsey - London

In the ancient history of Bermondsey, a new chapter is being written. One of the earliest settlements of the area, an abbey and religious order established close to what is now known as Abbey Street, preceded centuries of growth and, for much of its history, prosperity. 17th and 18th century Londoners knew Bermondsey as the place to get the best leather and tanning works done. As a prominent spot on the banks of the Thames, the area is and always has been a key strategic landing point for traffic into London.

Today Bermondsey, which was severely damaged in the aerial bombing of WWII, is undergoing a renaissance. As well as a growing commercial property sector, boosted by sustained demand for restaurants, bars, shops and offices, Bermondsey is also home to some jewels of the London tourist scene including HMS Belfast, and some of the city’s most interesting museums and cultural attractions.
